SproutWorld and the 12,000 trees project

What
SproutWorld has signed an agreement with the Polish State Forests (the only company outside of Poland to do so) – to purchase a 1.4-hectare plot of idle land (equivalent to two football fields) near the German border.

How
12,000 trees will be planted in 2023. The land will become a mixed coniferous forest with species like pine, birch, oak, and biogenetic varieties such as rowan and crab apple.

Why
As part of the Forest Carbon Farms project, the forest will help absorb COâ‚‚, store water, release oxygen, and boost biodiversity. Over time, some trees will be harvested for certified sustainable wood production.

SproutWorld is the only company outside of Poland to sign an agreement with the Polish State Forests, forming a unique cross-border partnership.

The area, Mieszkowice close to the German border, from above. Here, we are planting 12,000 trees to create a forest that supports and reflects the local Polish natural environment.

On 9th November 2021, we traveled to Warsaw to participate in a ceremony where she received the “Plant a Forest” certificate on behalf of SproutWorld.

Why a forest in Poland?

At SproutWorld, we’re always looking for strategic sustainability projects to support. And because the wood for our pencils comes from Poland, we had the idea to reach out to the Polish State Forests to see if we could collaborate somehow. Luckily, they came back with a positive answer.

They informed us of their Carbon Forest Farms project, which invites Polish companies to plant a certain number of trees every year.

100 years ago, forests covered 40% of Poland, but after World War II, this figure had dropped to just 21%. Since then, the state has focused on replanting, and today the country has reached 29% – with a goal of 33% by 2050. Poland is now one of the most ambitious countries in Europe when it comes to forest conservation and afforestation. It’s a great source of inspiration for others.

One tree can make
a difference

Every newly planted tree is better than no tree. The easiest thing would be to give up and be too overwhelmed by the climate crisis, thinking that you’re too small to make an impact.

12,000 trees do have an effect on CO2 absorption, but the most important thing is that this is part of a much greater project with hundreds of thousands of new trees. Furthermore, this is not a one-off for us, it’s just the beginning, and we plan to purchase more land and plant more trees.

We are proud of our forest project because we give back to the area where we source our wood. And because we’re part of a larger initiative alongside other companies, this proves what we’ve always said at SproutWorld: From small things big things grow.

The certified trees we use turn one tree into 175,000 pencils. And once used, each pencil has the potential to become a small tree sprout — meaning 175,000 new beginnings. With your SproutWorld pencil, you’re part of growing the next green change.
