Denmark-based Sprout will not settle for just making eco-friendly pencils that can sprout into herbs, flowers and vegetables. Now they are also developing the world’s first makeup pencil, so sustainable that it too can be planted like all other Sprout pencils. The new Sprout product is lined up with the company’s mission – to help people become more aware of the sustainable choices that surrounds them in their daily lives.
Today, Sprout has taken the world by storm and markets its plantable pencils in over 60 countries. They are finally able to reveal, what they’ve been planning for the last two years:
“We continue to expand the market for our Sprout pencils, and we’re now ready to enter the cosmetic industry. It’s an industry that we strongly feel needs renewal and more green products,” says new Sprout CEO, Sidsel Lundtang Rasmussen. She continues, “The cosmetic industry is experiencing a rising demand from consumers for transparency regarding what they put on their skin, and how it is produced. They also want to know what happens, when they discard their empty products.”
More than a makeup pencil:
“With the new Sprout makeup pencil, we aim to plant a more sustainable mindset in the cosmetic industry and with the consumers. That’s why our new makeup pencil is more than just a makeup pencil. We’ve created a natural and bio-degradable product of quality that can sprout a plant, when it otherwise would be thrown in the trashcan. It’s the first of its kind in the world, and we are very excited about the reception,” says Rasmussen.
Rasmussen adds, “The idea behind the plantable makeup pencil – like our other sprouting pencils – is to inspire to make small steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle. If you can plant a makeup pencil, what else can you do to recycle and give your belongings new life? The makeup pencil is also especially good as a gift because the receiver will enjoy it for a long time, as it signals originality and consideration from the giver.”
The world’s leading pencil producers are in:
Sprout’s makeup pencil is under development in collaboration with two of the world’s leading makeup pencil producers to insure the best possible result. They have high demands concerning quality and the necessary experience. Meanwhile, Sprout is also in dialog with some of the world’s biggest cosmetic brands that have shown interest in the initial stages of the process.
Sprout does not know exactly when the makeup pencil will arrive in the stores yet, but they make sure to spend the right amount of time on getting the right product on the shelves, while also looking for the right collaborator. “The consumer has to want to make a difference, like we do,” says Rasmussen.
But are there opportunities for a sprouting makeup pencil in the market we have today?
“Yes, definitely,” says Rasmussen. “About five billion makeup pencils are produced yearly worldwide. If only just a tiny portion could turn into plants instead of trash, we have come far.”

About the Sprout make-up pencil:
The plantable makeup pencil is under development, but the first prototype is ready. Initially, it will be an eye pencil in the colors black, marine blue and dark green. Later, the series will include pencils for lips and brows.
The Sprout Makeup Pencil will exclusively be made of natural materials like certified, sustainable wood, including a natural formula with minerals, jojoba oil and E-vitamin.
The pencil is not tested on animals. On the end of the pencil is a self-soluble capsule that contains quality seeds and dirt. When the eye makeup pencil is too short to use, it can be planted with the capsule down. After 1-3 weeks a plant like basil, forget me not or sunflower will sprout.
The pencil is expected to hit the market in Spring 2019.
